Pope cuts salaries for cardinals and church officials
Priests in the Vatican will have their wages cut from April. The cardinals will suffer the greatest losses. The corresponding order was published on the website of the Vatican Press Service.
The document says that personnel costs constitute a significant item of expenditure in the budget of the Holy See and the state of the Vatican City. And due to the coronavirus pandemic, the financial situation of the Holy See has deteriorated. They had to cut wages in order to preserve jobs.
According to the order of Pope Francis, from April 1, the salaries of cardinals will be cut by 10%, other leaders in the church – by 8%, and clergymen and monks – by 3%. In addition, in the next two years, some categories of employees will not be increased salaries.
We will remind, services with parishioners in the Vatican resumed in May 2020 after a break due to COVID-19. And in October last year, 20 million pounds were stolen from Francis's secret account.
