US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo avoided answering the question of recognizing the former presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as the legitimate head of state. RIA Novosti reports.
At the same time, according to Pompeo, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko “swore himself in by himself,” which “makes no sense.” Thus, the American diplomat did not give a clear answer to the question of who the United States recognizes as the head of Belarus.
The head of the State Department also warned Russia and other countries against interfering in the affairs of Belarus, as this would only worsen the situation in the region.
Earlier it was reported that the United States refused to join the UK and Canadian sanctions against Lukashenka and his entourage. According to Reuters, this position of Washington is connected with the hope that the European Union (EU) will develop a common position on the sanctions. One of the sources of the publication said that the package of US sanctions, including for “violations of human rights”, was almost ready.
