Russia will try to hold on in Syria, but it lacks resources.
Russian dictator Putin will receive a painful political blow if Bashar al-Assad's regime loses in Syria, including because it will affect his ability to influence the price of oil in the world.
This opinion was expressed by political expert Taras Zagorodniy.
He stated that losing to the Assad regime allows the gas pipeline to be built through Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Turkey to Europe. This will allow European countries to no longer depend on supplies from the Russian Federation.
In addition, Russia will lose its only military base on the Mediterranean Sea in Tartus, which has been there since the Soviet era.
“And a personal option – Putin fought for Assad to show everyone that leaders cannot be changed,” the expert believes.
The political scientist believes that Russia will lose influence in the Middle East if the Assad regime loses in Syria.
“Because since the Soviet Union, they have always wanted to be a player in the Middle East. Why? There is instability in the Middle East, oil prices are rising, profits are rising. There is no instability, incomes are falling and the USSR bad. With Russia too,” Zagorodniy explained.
He said that Russia does not want to lose its positions in Syria, but it does not have the strength to stay there.
“That is why they have problems with Georgia now, problems in Syria and also Ukraine. There are really a lot of “black swans”, but there are not enough resources to hold it together,” the expert added.
Recall that it was previously reported that the Kremlin is sending PIK mercenaries to Syria.
In addition, we previously reported that rebels in Syria have completely taken control of the city Aleppo.
