The head of the Ukrainian analytical center “Third Sector” Andriy Zolotarev, in an interview with RIA Novosti, assessed the chances of the former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko to receive a real punishment in the case of high treason.

The political scientist said he doubted that the ex-president would really go to jail. He believes that this case can drag on for a long time.

“But there is a certain element of justice in this, if Medvedchuk and the others are suspicious … This (coal supplies – note by Lenta.ru ) could not have been done without the green light and approval from Petro Poroshenko,” Zolotarev suggested.

At the same time, the political scientist believes that law enforcement officers should also ask questions to the former head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Vasily Gritsak, who held the relevant post under Poroshenko.

Zolotarev believes that earlier the negative reaction of the West and the “impotence” of the Ukrainian law enforcement system prevented the case against Poroshenko. At the same time, he is sure that it will take a long time to be investigated and heard in courts.

“I think that it will drag on for months, but before the end of Zelensky’s cadence, it is quite possible that he will be transferred to the court for consideration,” the political scientist suggested.

The Ukrainian authorities suspected Poroshenko of treason in early October. Law enforcers released the records concerning the case of Viktor Medvedchuk, head of the political council of the Opposition Platform – For Life party. These materials, according to security officials, prove the conspiracy of the former president of the republic with the “separatists”, including his involvement in the purchase of coal from the territories of Donbass not controlled by Kiev during the hostilities.
