A three-week pilot testing project for police robots has been completed in Singapore. Two law enforcement officers on wheels with the same name, Xavier, patrolled the apartment complex and the mall, identifying “unwanted” social behavior there, The Guardian reported. Local residents did not appreciate the experiment and accused the government of total control.
Police robots are equipped with seven cameras. For three weeks, they issued warnings for smoking in the wrong place, improper parking of bicycles and violation of social distancing rules, the publication specified. The robot continuously recorded what was happening and transmitted video to the control center.
“Please keep at a distance of one meter, please observe the rule: maximum five people in a group,” the robot said to people who did not keep the distance.
“It reminded me of” Robocop “,” – said a resident of Singapore, whom the robot police issued a warning. She added that she doubts this concept of the rule of law.
Local residents have long expressed dissatisfaction with the total control by the authorities. City-state laws do not impose restrictions on government surveillance, and Singaporeans themselves have little control over what happens to the collected data.
The Singapore government noted that robots do not restrict the rights of citizens and do not carry out their identification. The need for iron police is due to a lack of manpower. Due to the rapidly aging population, the police force is rapidly shrinking.
The island, with a population of about 5.5 million, now has 90,000 police cameras. By 2030, their number is expected to double, and facial recognition technology can be applied throughout the city.
