Police in Warsaw fired tear gas during protests against tougher abortion laws. RIA Novosti reports.
Militiamen tried to detain a minibus with sound-amplifying equipment. However, this caused aggression from the protesters, which led to a scuffle, during which tear gas was used. Prior to that, the police several times blocked the path of the protesters with cordons, but they were heading in the other direction.
At the moment, doctors are providing assistance to the victims. The action continues at Roman Dmovsky Square.
The abortion law in Poland is one of the toughest in Europe, but at the end of October 2020, the country's Constitutional Court ruled that it could be toughened up. The court's decision stated that a woman could not have an abortion, provided that the fetus had incurable pathologies. Abortion is permitted only in cases where she has been raped, incest has occurred, or when life and health are threatened.
The abortion decree provoked massive protests, and services were disrupted in some churches. Recently, conservative values have played an increasing role in the public life of Poland.
