Poles are changing their attitude towards Ukrainian refugees — reasons given

A quarter of Poles have changed their attitude towards Ukrainians for the worse over the past year.

Although the majority of Polish citizens remain friendly towards Ukrainians, there are those who have changed their attitude towards the negative.

The reasons and dynamics of such statistics are reported by yavp.pl.

According to a study by the Personal Service company, published during the Economic Forum in Polish city of Karpacz, 56% of Poles have not changed their attitude towards Ukrainians in 2023. However, 26% of respondents recognize a deterioration in attitudes towards refugees from Ukraine.

Which Polish citizen is most dissatisfied with refugees from Ukraine – statistics

In the winter of 2023, 14% of Poles reported a negative attitude towards Ukrainians – on 4% more than at the end of 2022. In the new survey, this share has increased. Now 17% of participants indicated their negative attitude towards Ukrainians.

Why have Poles started treating refugees worse

“The situation is getting worse due to the costs associated with the war in Ukraine. Poles are now facing runaway inflation and rising loan payments. This disappointment translates into a decrease in willingness to help. Moreover, it is unknown when the war will end, which means how long there will be a need to support Ukrainians,” the survey authors explain.

Meanwhile, the president Ukraine said if the West reduces aid to Ukraine, it will not only lead to a continuation of the war, but also create “risks for the West in its own backyard” in the context of Ukrainian refugees.
