Ukrainian polar explorers captured a rainbow around the Sun.

Ukrainian polar explorers at the Akademik Vernadsky station captured an unusual phenomenon – a solar halo.

As experts from the National Antarctic Science Center said, such a rainbow around the sun near the Ukrainian station can often be seen, because frost and high humidity are ideal conditions for this phenomenon to occur.

In addition, sometimes a halo can “hang” for several hours in a row, changing color and saturation.

“Why does this rainbow appear around the sun? When a large number of ice crystals accumulate in the atmosphere, the light passing through them is refracted and reflected. This is how the secondary glow itself is formed. Often the cause of the halo is cirrostratus clouds: they consist of ice crystals and almost transparent, so the light source can be seen through them. Generally, a halo has the shape of a circle and is observed around the sun. But this phenomenon can also be seen around the moon or other powerful light sources, such as street lamps. As for the shape, it can be different arcs , spots, pillars of light and the like,” the scientists explained.

According to them, the colors may also differ: from rich to pale, from multi-colored to white. In particular, one of the varieties of halo is parhelia. It looks like a light spot at the level of the sun, so it is often perceived as “two suns.”

“Halos occur not only in Antarctica or the Arctic: they can be found in different parts of the planet, including Ukraine. For example, one of our long-time subscribers constantly sends us a halo from the Vinnitsa region,” the polar explorers added.
