Poland wants to protect itself from the influx of Ukrainian goods – ministry

by alex

After the European Commission rejected Poland's demands to introduce duties on Ukrainian agricultural goods, Warsaw put forward new demands.

Poland insists on introducing regional mechanisms to protect against the influx of Ukrainian agricultural products onto the market. At the same time, the Polish government is ready to work on the development of port infrastructure for the transit of Ukrainian goods to third countries.

The Minister of Agriculture of Poland, Czeslaw Sekierski, said this in a comment to Business Insider.

According to him, the European Commission should provide a draft order to extend duty-free trade with Ukraine until June 2025. Consequently, the Ministry of Agriculture of Poland requires changes to the provision of the document on accelerating the implementation of protective mechanisms at the regional level if the market problem concerns not the entire EU, but an individual Member State or region.

According to Sekierski, Warsaw seeks to protect itself from the negative consequences of the influx of Ukrainian agricultural products onto the Polish market. The country continues internal consultations on the introduction of licenses for the export of agricultural goods, which were proposed by the Ukrainian side.

“After negotiations with the Minister of Agriculture of Ukraine Mykola Solsky, we jointly agreed that technical groups will be created whose task, in particular, will be to develop a specific framework within which trade between Poland and Ukraine should be regulated,” – Sekersky said.

According to him, there is political will in Warsaw to develop infrastructure that will facilitate the transit of Ukrainian goods to third countries. He assured that the government will work on the development of port infrastructure.

“Previously, unfortunately, little was done in this area. Therefore, in order to optimize and improve the possibilities of transit of agricultural products from Ukraine, it will be necessary to cooperate with other ministries on the development of port, railway and warehouse infrastructure,” explained the Polish minister.

Meanwhile, Poland announced successful negotiations with protesters blocking the Ukrainian border.
