The new NATO missile defense base will shoot down air targets that threaten the security of the Alliance's member countries, including Russian ones.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that a missile defense base will be opened in northern Poland “in the coming weeks” NATO.

“In the coming weeks, we will open a missile defense base in Redzikowo near Puck. This is the base we agreed on with the United States,” Sikorski said.
He also said that he was negotiating “so that the missile defense systems could shoot down Russian missiles aimed at Poland, and not just Iranian missiles aimed at the United States.”
Jens Stoltenberg, who held the post of NATO Secretary General at the time, announced operational readiness for the launch of the new base's mission, which is part of the NATO missile defense shield, back in July. The Redzikowo base is the US contribution to NATO's integrated air and missile defense system. Its construction lasted eight years and was accompanied by several scandals. Initially, the military facility was planned to be commissioned in 2018.
In his comment, Sikorski did not mention the war in Ukraine and President Zelensky's request to shoot down Russian air targets over Ukrainian territory. Perhaps because the Redzikowo base is located more than 500 km from the border with Ukraine.
Recall that Poland and the Baltic states discussed a strategy in the event of a Russian attack. The allies warned that they would strike St. Petersburg in the first minutes after the attack, without waiting for NATO command to decide to apply Article 5 of the charter.
