Poland has changed the rules of stay for Ukrainian refugees: what you need to know

In Poland, from July 1, the conditions for providing assistance to Ukrainians will be changed refugees, in particular, one-time assistance in the amount of 300 zlotys (3 thousand UAH) will be canceled and new rules for obtaining a PESEL number will be introduced.

At the same time, the period of temporary protection for Ukrainians has been extended until September 30, 2025, which ensures access to medical services and social benefits.

“Ukrainians will be able to continue to use medical services, receive family and social benefits, and also stay in collective accommodation facilities“, the message says.

Children's payments

Ukrainians can receive a one-time payment in the amount of 300 (3 thousand UAH) zlotys per year to purchase school supplies under the “Good Start” program if the child studies at a Polish educational institution.

Additionally, the assignment and payment of a child-rearing allowance of 800 zlotys (8 thousand UAH) will also depend on the child’s education in a Polish educational institution. New rules for payments for children will take effect from June 1, 2025.

The changes also affected additional free Polish language lessons for Ukrainian students. The new law sets a maximum period of 36 months during which Ukrainian students can participate in such classes. These measures are aimed at facilitating the adaptation of Ukrainian children to Polish schools.

Confirmation rules

Under the new rules, refugees wishing to obtain a PESEL number (Personal Identification Number) must provide a valid travel document. The law changes the deadline for applying for a PESEL number with UKR status from 30 days from the date of arrival on Polish territory to “immediately upon arrival”.

Changes in support funding

Also, from July 1, funding for Ukrainian men will be possible only on the basis of an agreement with local authorities. This means that payments for accommodation and food for refugees will be more controlled and targeted.

“There are also changes to the cost sharing rules for room and board in collective accommodation centers to make the collection of appropriate subsidies more efficient”, — noted in the message.

Cancellation of residence permit

The new law also provides for the introduction of new grounds for revocation of a temporary residence permit for citizens of Ukraine.

“The permit may be revoked for reasons of national defense or security, or if a Ukrainian citizen leaves Polish territory for a period of at least 6 months. Such changes, according to the government , aimed at ensuring the national security of Poland “, – indicated in the message .

Recall that President of Poland Andrzej Duda signed changes to the law on assistance to Ukrainian citizens with temporary protection.
