Poland's permanent representatives to NATO asked to use the fourth article of the cooperation agreement and convene an alliance council in connection with the situation in Ukraine, said Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller, TASS reports.

“The Polish permanent mission to NATO was instructed to apply for the launch of the fourth article [of the NATO treaty] for general monitoring of the situation,” the spokesman said.

According to him, at 10:30 (Moscow time) at the headquarters of the alliance in Brussels, a meeting will be held on the situation in Ukraine. Muller stressed that the Polish government, in connection with the security threat, is waiting for a joint decision of the members of the defense bloc to increase the NATO contingent in Poland.

“There will also be a meeting of EU leaders tonight. We will seek the imposition of long-term sanctions against Russia,” the spokesman added. He specified that potential restrictive measures include a trade embargo, a ban on entry into the EU of the Russian leadership and a blockade of financial systems.

On February 24, it became known that the ambassadors of the NATO member states will hold an emergency morning meeting to discuss joint actions in response to the special military operation of Russian troops in Ukraine to protect Donbass.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a special military operation to protect the republics of Donbass. The head of state also turned to external hostile forces that might try to pose a threat to Russia and its citizens. According to him, Russia's response will be immediate.
