PlayStation 5 has set a sales record. The portal Vgchartz reports.
Experts recorded information that 3.73 million units of Sony consoles were sold in the world in the first five weeks. In comparison, the competitive Xbox Series X / S has sold just over two million units. Launched in 2017, the Nintendo Switch handheld console sold 2.33 million units in its first five weeks. According to the disclosed data, at the start of sales, the PS5 market share is 46.2 percent.
A similar dynamic was observed in the world's largest markets. In particular, in the United States, during the first five weeks, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S and Nintendo Switch consoles sold 1.5, 1.1 and 0.9 million units, respectively. In Europe, they managed to sell 1.3 million PS5, while Xbox Series X / S and Nintendo Switch were purchased by about 533 and 601 thousand gamers, respectively.
In Japan, home to the PS5 and Switch, Nintendo's compact console led the way. In the first five weeks, NS sold 564,000 copies. During the same period, 226 thousand PlayStation 5 units and 31 thousand Xbox Series X / S devices were sold in the local market.
The authors of the publication noted the leadership of the new generation set-top box Sony. The report clarified that if the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X / S were launched on sale synchronously around the world, then the PlayStation 5 first of all – on November 12 – debuted in the US, Canada, Japan and other countries. On December 19, the console became available for purchase worldwide.
