Since January 1, 2022, Armenia has banned the sale of plastic bags up to 50 microns thick. RIA Novosti was told about this at the Ministry of the Environment.
From now on, the sale and free distribution of plastic bags “in objects and places, including mobile and in the open air” is stopped in the country. An exception was left for packaging films, as well as for bags and sacks from recyclable materials.
The authorities explained the ban by the fact that the bags are used on average for 10-15 minutes, and it takes 400 years for them to decompose in the natural environment.
On December 10, a similar law “On restricting the circulation of plastic bags” came into force in Ukraine. It involves a ban on the free distribution of plastic bags in stores, pharmacies, food outlets and the provision of services. Administrative sanctions will be applied to violators of the requirement.
In September, Denis Butsaev, the head of the Russian Ecological Operator (REO), said that Russia may soon also impose a ban on the production of disposable plastic goods and packaging. The list of goods that were recommended to be excluded from circulation in the country consists of 28 items, including: disposable plastic devices, dishes, coffee capsules, blister packs (except for medicines), packaging for tobacco products, as well as packaging for eggs, cotton swabs and several types of packages.
