At Schiphol, the main airport in the Netherlands, located about 20 minutes from Amsterdam, on the advice of bird watchers, an unusual decision was made – with the birds, which pose a serious danger to taking off and landing liners, they decided to fight with the help of pigs.
Experts gave their recommendations after carefully studying the reasons for the high concentration of birds in the immediate vicinity of the airfield. It turned out that the birds are attracted by the remnants of the beet crop, which were planted in the fields around the air harbor.
Now 20 pigs feast on beets, and they also drive their winged competitors across the field.
Previously, laser installations were used to scare away birds at the airport, and plant seeds with a pungent odor were sown.
According to scientists, after a detachment of artiodactyls got down to business, the number of birds in the airport area has noticeably decreased.
In general, the world uses many methods to scare away large birds in the area of runways: acoustic installations, specially trained dogs, hunting hawks, unmanned aerial vehicles in the form of birds of prey, propane cannons and others. The problem is that none of the methods gives one hundred percent protection, and a collision of the liner with a large bird like a seagull or a goose may well end in disaster.
