Peru's new president resigns amid protests

The new President of Peru, Manuel Merino de Lama, resigned amid ongoing protests in the country over the corruption investigation against the former head of state, RIA Novosti reports, citing the Peruvian radio station RPP.

Merino de Lama resigned after 13 (out of 18) members of the government formed three days earlier. The reason was the political crisis that broke out in the country.

It began on November 9 after parliament voted to remove former President Martin Wizcarra from power. After that, according to the laws of the country, Merino de Lama automatically became the head of state.

However, his appointment angered supporters of Wizcarra, who organized street protests. One of them was severely suppressed by the police, two people were killed, which provoked new riots.
