Permission for Ukraine to strike deep into Russia could be 'tacit' — The Times

The restrictions may be lifted without an official announcement of this decision.

The UK and the US may lift restrictions on the use of long-range Storm Shadow missiles, but most likely this will be a “private agreement” that will not be made public until the first strike on the territory Russia.

The Times writes about this.

According to the publication's sources, Western diplomats are ready to sign this “secret” decision, but will probably refrain from making official statements at the UN next week, since a premature announcement of this step would be a warning to Russia.

“Thus, an agreement could be reached behind closed doors to allow Ukraine to launch British and French-made cruise missiles at Russia with the element of surprise,” the publication quotes diplomatic sources as saying.

It is noted that the United States first wants to see Zelensky's plan for ending the war and hear his arguments on how strikes deep into Russia could help Ukraine hold out in the upcoming winter.

The final decision is expected to be made during the UN General Assembly next week. But, according to sources, the White House is “nervous” about whether this long-awaited radical step will harm Kamala Harris's election campaign.

The publication claims that the US Secretary of State and the foreign ministers of Britain, France, Germany and Italy are already working on the agreement in order to prepare it for the start of the UN General Assembly. British diplomatic sources explained to journalists that NATO wants to demonstrate unity and coherence in its actions, so as not to create the impression of “dominance in decision-making” by Great Britain and the United States.

Recall that American professor of political science and law David Schultz believes that Biden will decide to give Ukraine permission to strike Russia with Western weapons only after the elections in November.
