“Perhaps this is not such a provocative idea”: a political scientist explained Macron’s statement about troops in Ukraine

"Explosive" Macron's idea is under discussion.

The idea of French President Emmanuel Macron about EU troops in Ukraine can be considered not as provocative as they said the day before .

This was discussed in a commentary by Alexey Melnik, head of foreign policy and international security programs at the Razumkov Center, on the Espresso TV channel.

He spoke about the practical implementation of Macron’s initiative to send troops to Ukraine. The expert first of all reminded that this was not about units that would directly participate in hostilities precisely on the line of contact.

Melnik also added that during the discussion, acceptable options can be found from the point of view of international law and how this can be justified to Western societies and politics.

“Macron first announced this during a meeting in Paris. His statement was simply an explosion. Macron's idea of sending foreign troops to Ukraine looked provocative and completely impossible. The first reaction was total rejection by all participants, objections. Now it is in the process of being discussed, there is already support. Like, perhaps this is not such a provocative idea,” he explained.

According to the expert, Macron spoke about Odessa.

“Let me remind you that the vulnerability of Odessa is that there are not enough air defense systems there. Then why not discuss with the French partners the possibility of redeploying several air defense units? We are not talking about protecting military targets or the front line. This to protect civilians and the infrastructure of Odessa,” Melnyk noted.

According to him, we can talk about the use, for example, of peacekeeping or stabilization forces on the border with Transnistria, where from time to time the Russian Federation tries to create a conflict.

Recall that in the separatist region of Moldova an Mi-8 helicopter unexpectedly burned down. It is not yet known what exactly caused the explosion, but the result was the loss of a combat-ready air unit by the Russian-backed separatists.
