An international team of scientists analyzed the prevalence of tobacco smoking in the world, and also assessed its consequences.
The study covered 204 countries and the period from 1990 to 2019. Naked Science briefly talks about it.
Scientists have counted 1.14 billion active smokers in the world. This is comparable to the populations of India and China. Most people smoke in China, India, Indonesia, USA, Russia, Bangladesh, Japan, Turkey, Vietnam and the Philippines.
In 2019, the loss from smoking amounted to 7.69 million deaths and 200 million years of life, scientists write. They also said that smoking contributed to 20.2% of all-cause deaths among men. There are fewer tobacco-related deaths among women.
