Pentagon develops 'contingency plan' during Pelosi visit to Taiwan

by alex

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to visit Taiwan in August . As a result, the Pentagon is making plans for any “contingencies” that may occur during her visit.

In August, Pelosi is going to visit the island of Taiwan, which the Chinese authorities intend to seize if the island declares independence. The US says that Pelosi “will end up in one of the hottest spots in the world, where an accident, erroneous step or misunderstanding can threaten her safety. Therefore, the Pentagon is developing plans for any eventuality.”

This is reported by the AP.

It is noted that it is not completely known whether the Speaker of the House of Representatives will go to Taiwan. However, in this case, the United States plans to increase the movement of forces and assets in the Indo-Pacific region.

While U.S. officials have not released details, it is known that fighter jets, ships, surveillance equipment and other military systems are likely to be used to provide protection rings for Pelosi's flight to and stay in Taiwan.

It is noted that Pelosi will be the highest US official to visit Taiwan since 1997. And while any foreign travel by a senior US leader requires additional security, this visit will “go beyond the usual security measures for travel to less risky places.”

Note, China considers autocratic Taiwan its own territory and puts forward the prospect of its annexations by force. The United States maintains informal relations and defense ties with Taiwan.

Recall that Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe said earlier that Beijing would “won't hesitate to go to war” if Taiwan declared independence.

After that, It has been reported that 29 aircraft of the People's Republic of China Air Force entered Taiwan's air defense zone without warning.
