The US president remains open to dialogue with Kim Jong-un. But North Korea has not responded yet.
President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he would “achieve a resolution to the conflict with North Korea.”
Reuters writes about this.
“I had a good relationship with Kim Jong-un, and I get along very well with him. So we'll see what happens. Some people say there's a potential conflict, I think we'll resolve it,” Trump said.
Seoul-based NK News, a website that specializes in analyzing the situation in North Korea, reported that the DPRK delegation to the UN in New York repeatedly refused to accept Trump's letter addressed to the North Korean leader.
The White House said on June 11 that Trump would welcome repeated communications with Kim, although it did not confirm that any letter had been sent.
During his second term, Trump acknowledged that North Korea is a “nuclear state.” In January of this year, Trump called North Korean leader Kim Jong-un a “tough cookie.”
Trump has previously said that the standoff with North Korea over its nuclear program could lead to a serious military conflict. However, he prefers to resolve the situation diplomatically.
However, the president has said he wants to resolve the crisis peacefully, and his administration is preparing a series of new economic sanctions against North Korea.
