According to analysts, Croatian Prime Minister Plenkovic wants to hold early elections due to fears that his party will lose popularity.
Croatian lawmakers have voted to dissolve the Croatian Sabor, the country's unicameral parliament, to begin holding elections. They should pass within the next two months.
This is reported by Reuters.
At first the elections were planned for the autumn, but the government decided to hold them before the elections to the European Parliament in June.
An official application for the dissolution of parliament was submitted by 11 opposition parties led by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the left-wing environmental party “We Can!” after a wave of protests against the policies of the pro-government Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) led by the current Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.
President Zoran Milanovic is expected to officially set the election date this week.
The previous parliamentary elections in Croatia were held on July 5, 2020. The CDU party won them, winning 66 seats. The center-right HDZ has led the government for the past three terms, and Plenkovic has been prime minister for the past eight years.
Let us recall that the Croatian Ministry of Defense proposes to return conscription to the army.
