Parkinson's disease: Russian experts have learned early diagnosis
The world's first method for the early diagnosis of severe brain diseases has been created in Russia. What is the essence of this project, the MIR 24 TV channel was told by the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor, doctor of biological sciences, head of the laboratory of nervous and neuroendocrine regulation of the Institute of Developmental Biology named after Koltsova Mikhail Ugryumov.
– What brain diseases are we talking about? Why are they classified as global challenges to humanity?
Mikhail Ugryumov: We are talking about chronic brain diseases that develop for a long time. These, first of all, include such neurodegenerative diseases that are on everyone's lips: Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. The problem is that so far not a single patient has been cured in any country, although doctors and scientists are making colossal efforts to achieve this.
The question arises – are these fatal diseases or is it possible to somehow help the patient? The peculiarity of these diseases is that they develop for 20-30 years without external manifestations. When the first symptoms appear, and the patient comes to the doctor, the doctor only at this moment can diagnose the clinical symptoms. But it is already too late to treat, because at this time more than half of the neurons that are responsible for one or another function, for example, for the motor or for the function of learning, memory, social adaptability, are already lost.
The problem is that from this moment on, all attempts to help the patient are very limited, and the case never comes to a cure. Therefore, these problems are called socially significant, because this is a tragedy not only for the patient himself and his environment, but also for the state, because this is associated with a demographic and financial problem.
Neurodegenerative diseases, according to WHO forecasts, are growing exponentially. In the next 15 years, the number of these diseases is projected to increase threefold. This means a huge financial and demographic burden for the state.
