For Walter Ablinger, the season is over prematurely after a training accident and several broken ribs.
The handbike athlete and Paralympics winner Walter Ablinger overlooked a parked truck trailer during a training trip near Bad Füssing and touched his right front wheel. The successful disabled athlete suffered several broken ribs and is currently in hospital.
“That was still luck in misfortune. I was just able to avoid the drawbar, fell during the rapid steering movement and hit the front wheel of the trailer without braking,” Ablinger was quoted in a broadcast. He will be treated as an inpatient for another week in the Rotthalmünster hospital. “I have certainly driven this route a thousand times and maybe that's why my thoughts weren't 100 percent on the subject,” Ablinger admitted.
Ablinger is already looking ahead to the coming season, he would like to start with light training from November and prepare for 2022 with the highlights of the European Championships in Upper Austria and the World Championships in Canada. “I won the world championship title on this overseas course in 2013, this route suits me,” says Ablinger, who is very motivated again.
