Paleontologists from St. Petersburg have described all the structures of the crocodile's brain
Scientists from St. Petersburg State University were able to describe all the structures in the cerebral box of the crocodile skull. They did it first in the world, writes 78.ru.
During the study, previously unknown signs of evolution were discovered and explanations for how the cerebral box of crocodiles was formed. In addition, scientists have found out how these animals learned to hunt not only fish, but also other animals, and how crocodiles were able to survive to the present day.
To do this, the researchers examined 75 brain boxes. The models were different – from embryos inside an egg to individuals whose skulls reached half a meter. A tomograph and three-dimensional imaging were used.
Until that moment, no one in the world had compiled a list of the names of all parts of the brain box. In the course of the study, St. Petersburg scientists compiled a summary table, where they ordered all the terms, and also assigned a name to each structure in the brain box of crocodiles.
Earlier, a new species of ancient crocodile was found in China. The reptile lived more than 100 million years ago, when the climate was warmer and more humid.
