Pakistan reacts to rumors of involvement in conflict in Karabakh

Pakistani Foreign Ministry denied media reports pointing to the country's involvement in the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. This is stated in the official statement of the spokesman of the department Zahid Hafiz Choudhry, published on Facebook.

Choudhry called the publications testifying to the military support of Azerbaijan as speculative and groundless.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman called on Armenia to stop hostilities and added that Pakistan supports Azerbaijan's position: “The shelling of civilians by the Armenian armed forces is a regrettable phenomenon that causes condemnation. Yerevan is obliged to stop hostilities in order to avoid further escalation [of the conflict]. “

Media reports about Islamabad's involvement in the conflict began to appear after Free News.AM broadcast a recording of a telephone conversation in which a resident of Azerbaijan mentioned the presence of the Pakistani military in the country. Talking to an unknown person, the man said that a foreign military contingent was allegedly based in the Agdam region adjacent to Nagorno-Karabakh.

Earlier, the representative of the Armenian Ministry of Defense Artsrun Hovhannisyan stated that on October 2, Azerbaijani troops attacked the city of Stepanakert. Later it became known that the Azerbaijani army struck a blow on the bridge connecting Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been arguing over the ownership of Nagorno-Karabakh for 30 years. The aggravation of the conflict occurred on September 27.
