PACE adopted a resolution calling the Holodomor an act of genocide aimed at destroying the Ukrainian people.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 genocide of the Ukrainian people.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced this.
He thanked PACE and called this decision the restoration of historical justice.
“I am grateful to PACE for the recognition The Holodomor of 1932-1933 was a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Restoring historical justice and the memory of the victims of the Holodomor sends a clear signal: fair punishment for all past and current crimes of Moscow is inevitable,” the head of state noted.
In turn, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba noted that PACE also called on all member countries of the Council of Europe and other parliaments to recognize the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
“I thank PACE for recognizing the Stalinist Holodomor of 1932-1933 as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people. It is also important that PACE called on all countries of the Council of Europe and other parliaments to follow this example. This is a morally, historically and politically correct act,” Kuleba said.
What is known about the PACE resolution on Ukraine
PACE adopted a resolution entitled “Ensuring a just peace in Ukraine and lasting security in Europe” (73 votes for, 1 against).
Deputy Chairman of the Servant of the People faction Evgenia Kravchuk said that the document renews support for all key international initiatives of Ukraine: from the Peace Formula and the creation of the Special Tribunal to the Crimean Platform.
The Assembly also named the illegal fake elections and referendums organized by the Russian Federation in occupied territories of Ukraine as being an abuse of political freedoms for military purposes.
In addition, the organization condemned the Kremlin's decision to withdraw from the Black Sea Grain Initiative as an attempt to further militarize trade and food.
“In this context The Assembly decided to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide aimed at destroying the Ukrainian nation, language and culture. Another voice in support of Ukraine in the international arena,” Kravchuk noted.
Recall that the Holodomor was recognized as genocide of the Ukrainian people by parliaments of about three dozens of countries around the world.
In July of this year, the Italian Senate and the Dutch House of Representatives recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
