Scientists plan to create a detailed map of the locations of the discovered barrels and take samples of water, the seabed and organisms.
At least a thousand barrels of radioactive waste have been found on the seabed of the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean, just 1,000 kilometers off the coast of Galicia.
BILD writes about this.
The locations of 1,000 barrels of waste have been mapped, but many more are expected to be found. They are located at a depth of about 4,500 meters.
The barrels were discovered thanks to an international scientific mission that managed to map this dangerous ecological legacy in detail.
The study, carried out on board the L'Atalante, is part of the Nodssum project, which aims to analyse the state and location of waste dumped between the early 1950s and 1990 by the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland.
Scientists fear that radioactive waste could affect marine life in this part of the Atlantic Ocean.
Let us recall that the most dangerous toy with radioactive uranium was put up for auction in the UK.
