Over 900 earthquakes in two weeks: Japan records seismic surge

The Tokara archipelago in southern Japan has been suffering from continuous tremors.

Intense seismic activity continues in southern Japan, with more than 900 earthquakes occurring in the Tokara archipelago region since June 21.

The Guardian reported this.

Activity beneath the seabed remains high and residents are advised to be on alert for evacuation, agency spokesman Ayataka Ebita said. More than 740 tremors, some of which reached 1 or higher on Japan's intensity scale, were recorded on the islands in the 10 days leading up to July 1.

“It seems like the ground is constantly shaking. It's really scary to even fall asleep,” said one local resident.

The highest number of earthquakes in a day — 183 — was recorded on June 23. After a short decline, activity increased again — on June 29, there were 98 tremors.

Experts explain that the underwater terrain around the islands contributes to the accumulation of pressure, which is regularly released. Meanwhile, the Japanese government has warned of a real threat of a “mega-earthquake” on the Pacific coast in the next 30 years, which could take almost 300,000 lives and cause trillions of dollars in damage.

Let us recall that on the night of July 1, 2025, an earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale occurred in Poltava region. The epicenter was recorded near the village of Karpusi in Poltava district. The head of the Information Collection and Processing Center of the Main Center for Special Control Yuriy Andrushchenko stated that Poltava region is located within the Dnieper-Donets Basin, a region with increased tectonic activity. In recent years, at least ten such tremors have been recorded here. Although such earthquakes do not pose a danger, they can be felt by people with increased

Seismic activity has also been observed in other regions of the world in recent times. In particular, on June 20, an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 was recorded in the Iranian province of Semnan after Israeli attacks on strategic facilities. And on June 7, a tremor of magnitude 5.3 occurred near Mount Athos in Greece.
