The accusations against the editors of the student magazine DOXA are “ludicrous”, according to the signers from the international academic community.

DOXA editors in court

Over 250 scientists, teachers, academics and translators have signed an open letter in solidarity with three journalists and the editor-in-chief of the Russian student magazine DOXA, who has been sentenced to house arrest for “involving minors in dangerous activities.” As stated on Friday, April 16, on the platform where the appeal was posted, “the accusations against the editors are ridiculous.”

“DOXA posted a rather innocent video urging to protest without fear, and (indicating – Ed .) That it is illegal to expel students for political reasons,” the signatories note. Later, in response to Roskomnadzor's request, the video was removed. Despite this, “charges were brought against the editors.”

The appeal was signed by professors from the USA, Sweden, Great Britain

The message was signed by professors of a number of prestigious educational institutions from around the world: New York University, University of California at Berkeley, Lund University in Sweden, University of London.

“Only those who use education to achieve obedience outlaw critical thinking as harmful,” the authors of the letter summarized.

It is forbidden to leave the house and use the Internet

On April 14, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow, having satisfied the request of the investigation, forbade the editors of the publication Vladimir Metelkin, Alla Gutnikova, Natalia Tyshkevich, as well as DOXA editor-in-chief Armen Aramyan to leave the house from 00:00 to 23:59.

In addition, without the permission of the investigator, journalists cannot communicate with anyone other than lawyers and close relatives, as well as use communications, including the Internet.

According to investigators, in a January video of DOXA on YouTube, the defendants in the case urged those under 18 to attend unauthorized rallies in support of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The DOXA team later removed the video from YouTube at the request of Roskomnadzor. According to the lawyers and the accused, there was no call to go out to uncoordinated actions, but there was a call not to be afraid of pressure from teachers and the administration of the university. During the January protests, students frequently complained of threats of expulsion for participating in the protests.

DOXA Magazine

DOXA magazine was originally created by students and alumni of the Higher School of Economics (HSE) and other universities in support of students who were detained in the summer of 2019 at protests against the prohibition of the admission of opposition candidates to the Moscow City Duma elections. In December 2019, the HSE deprived the journal of its student organization status.
