More than 160 Nobel Prize winners signed an appeal in which they called on Russia to stop hostilities in Ukraine.
They signed an open letter to urge the Russian government to stop the invasion of Ukraine and withdraw troops from there.
Nobel Prize winners in all fields from 1975 to 2021 compared Russia's “special operation” in Ukraine with the German attack on Poland in 1939 and the USSR in 1941.
They did not blame the Russian people, but condemned Putin's military actions and aggression.
The Russian invasion tarnished Russia's international reputation for decades to come. It will become an obstacle to its economic development and a source of hardship for its people.
The imposed sanctions will limit the freedom of movement of talented and hardworking Russians around the world. Why now build a wall between Russia and the world? the letter says.
They also recalled that Russia's actions violate the UN Charter and ignore the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which obliged Russia and other countries to respect the sovereignty, independence and existing borders of Ukraine.
