Small doses of hard drugs can now be stored in the state. For example, the presence of heroin (up to 1 gram), methamphetamine (up to 2 grams), cocaine (up to 2 grams) and a number of other substances will no longer be considered a reason for arrest by the police.
Custody of such doses will also not be subject to detention: instead, law enforcement agencies can issue a fine of $ 100. CNN notes that now the punishment is comparable to a fine for a traffic violation. As a last resort, authorities may order the person to undergo a medical examination to make sure they are not addicted.
The law came into force on February 1. Most residents of the state approved this initiative in the general election on November 3, 2020 (55.8 percent of the population voted in favor).
On December 2, 2020, the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs voted to remove cannabis from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Drugs, the list of substances requiring the most stringent control.
