One of the control centers of the space forces. The duty crew is monitoring satellites from the orbital constellation.
It all started back in 1957. Then the Soviet Union made, in fact, a space coup. What seemed inaccessible before, that autumn day changed the consciousness of literally all the inhabitants of the planet.
Here, in the main test center named after Titov, the military operates the GLONASS system. The Russian analog of GPS has a smaller number of satellites, 24, but due to its more advantageous location in orbit, it provides no less accuracy.
“As Suvorov said, every soldier should know his place. The global satellite system makes it possible to successfully solve this, ”- said the assistant to the head of the Main Testing Space Center. German Titov Nikolay Golovin.
The military also controls the Era-GLONASS system introduced in Russia. The one that, in the event of a serious accident, helps to save lives.
“It allows in emergency situations, or an accident, or something else to promptly call the rescue service, firefighters, doctors to provide assistance without the help of a mobile phone,” explained the head of the navigation and temporary support department of the GIKS im. German Titov Sergey Nikolaev.
The military has more important tasks. For example, to warn about a missile attack on Russia. Wherever a rocket is launched – on the ground, from the water, in the sky, anywhere in the world? the operational officers on duty will instantly find out about this and will immediately report back.
“This is a space system that continuously monitors the Earth's surface. Why is this control necessary, what can it allow to detect? It allows us to detect a lot, and first of all, these are the actions of our potential partners, which will not go unnoticed for us, ”said Viktor Shestopalov, deputy commander of the unit for armaments.
We are at the control room of the space missile attack warning system. Journalists are not just rare guests here, but in the history of modern Russia they come here only for the second time. The object is secret and ordinary civilians are not allowed to enter. The journalists were allowed in only for a minute, and then in honor of the holiday – on October 4, the Space Forces celebrate their professional day.
Girls also serve here. They perform strategically important tasks of monitoring the Earth's surface. And it is carried out without interruption, 24 hours a day.
“I like the fact that we are performing a very important task, and I feel that Russia, the country really needs us,” said department engineer Karina Kulik.
The Space Forces also keep time. Literally. In their hands is the so-called hydrogen synchronizer. It is on it that navigation devices synchronize their watches. This is the second exact time in Russia. Their error is one second in a million years.
