Putin used Orban to express commitment to the “final” end the war.
Russian President Vladimir Putin used a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to oppose a negotiated ceasefire.
This is stated in a report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
“Putin said that the agreement between Russia and Ukraine should not lead to a temporary ceasefire, since this would allow Ukraine to regroup and rearm, and that Russia is in favor of a “complete” and “final” end to the conflict,” the report says.
According to analysts, the dictator used the Hungarian prime minister, to reject a ceasefire through peaceful negotiations.
“Putin expressed his commitment to a “final” end to the war, which will achieve his goal of destroying Ukrainian statehood,” the ISW noted.
The American Institute for the Study of War also recalled that on July 4, Putin directly rejected Russia's participation in any meaningful negotiations on a ceasefire agreement, moving away from his usual apparent interest in negotiations, and on July 5, at a press conference with Orban, Putin openly rejected any ceasefire through negotiations.
Recall that Viktor Orban arrived in Russia on Friday, July 5.
The Hungarian politician's visit was not announced in advance Moscow, not Budapest. Ahead of the publication, the Financial Times, citing one Hungarian and two EU sources, reported that Orban would meet with the Russian dictator to “listen to both sides of the conflict.”
