Orban's referendum on Ukraine's fate in the EU has failed: the opposition accuses the government of falsifications

The opposition claims that, despite the authorities' propaganda statements, the total number of Hungarians who took part in the referendum was a maximum of 600,000.

The nationwide “referendum” Voks 2025, initiated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Ukraine's accession to the European Union, has been a complete failure. The leader of the opposition Tisza party, Peter Magyar, claims that the official results of the poll, announced by the authorities, are significantly inflated and may be falsified.

He stated this in a message on the social network Facebook.

The failure of “people's consultations” and the opposition's doubts

On Friday, June 20, the Voks 2025 poll, which asked citizens to express their opinions on Ukraine's possible membership in the EU, officially ended in Hungary. However, according to Peter Magyar, the actual number of participants differs significantly from the number declared by the authorities. The Hungarian authorities claimed that 2 million citizens took part in the poll, but the opposition questions these figures.

Péter Magyar cited data showing that the actual participation was significantly lower. According to information from different levels of the postal service, only 3-7% of the “ballots” sent to citizens were returned from the country's regions. This means that more than 500,000 people took part in the paper vote, and the number of online responses was even lower, which was confirmed even by the official Gergely Gulyás.

Orban's campaign 'total failure'

Madjar also said that the government's propaganda campaign Voks 2025 was a complete fiasco.

“The total failure of the government propaganda campaign Voks 2025… Despite the propaganda lies, the total number of “voters” can be a maximum of 600 thousand. And this is the lowest number in the entire “glorious” history of the National Consultations. And this “managed” to be achieved in just a few months, under the condition of total mobilization and the conditions of total mobilization and the conditions of mobilization. Madjar emphasized, noting that these funds were spent on provocative advertising and posters.

He also added that “the corrupt government is not interested in the real problems of the people, and they do not dare to look people in the eye, so they only correspond with them.” He contrasted this with his own “Voice of the Nation” campaign, during which his party personally communicated with citizens across Hungary, discussing not only Ukraine, but also “real Hungarian fateful issues.”

Recall that the Voks 2025 campaign is part of the Orban government's consistent policy of blocking or slowing down Ukraine's European integration, often using controversial methods. Within its borders, campaign posters with Zelensky's photo were placed in Hungary.

In early June, Viktor Orban mused that the expansion of the European Union was a noble idea, but that Ukraine would allegedly “suck every euro out of the bloc” intended to strengthen European families, farmers and industry.

Earlier, in May, Viktor Orban stated that if Ukraine is accepted into the European Union, the EU will automatically become a participant in the war.
