Orban proposed turning Ukraine into a “buffer zone”

The Hungarian Prime Minister distinguished himself with new cynical statements about the war in Ukraine.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban believes that Ukraine can survive as a state only if it becomes a buffer zone between Russia and the West, refusing integration into the EU and NATO.

The politician, who is called “Putin’s friend,” said this in a conversation with former Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel, reports Die Presse.

“Whether we like it or not, whether Ukrainians like it or not, Ukraine is where it is on the map. The best prospect for it would be the creation of a buffer zone between Russia and the West, of course, with security guarantees,” Orban said.

In his opinion, if this does not happen, Ukraine will lose its statehood. “The Russians will destroy it again and again and again. Russia will never accept an EU and NATO member like Ukraine on its doorstep. Never,” emphasized the Hungarian Prime Minister.

He believes that the chance to integrate Kyiv into these structures was missed at the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008. At the time, Orbán said, “Russia was too weak to block NATO expansion to include Ukraine,” but the allies failed to reach a consensus.

According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, the war in Ukraine “definitely will not end” this year.

At the same time, he believes that Kyiv should agree to a ceasefire so as not to lose even more territory and suffer defeat. In his opinion, the EU cannot be counted on to provide sufficient weapons and money, since the bloc “cannot do this.”

At the same time, Orban emphasized that the Kremlin does not consider Kyiv an equal participant in the negotiations. According to him, Russia will conduct a dialogue on a settlement only with the United States, since the European Union is “not strong enough for it to take it seriously.”

Recall that earlier Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban refused to call the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine a “war”. In turn, he further uses the terminology of his friend, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
