One of the participants of “Watergate” Gordon Liddy dies
Died one of the main participants in the Watergate scandal, a former FBI officer Gordon Liddy. He was 90 years old, writes The Washington Post.
As noted, his son told reporters about Liddy's death. According to the man, his father died in Virginia. The ex-employee died for natural reasons.
In 1972, members of the Republican Party during the presidential election campaign tried to install bugs at the headquarters of the Democrats, located in the Watergate Hotel. The resulting scandal forced Republican President Richard Nixon to resign in 1974.
Liddy worked for Nixon. It was he who led the hacking of the headquarters of the Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern. Liddy later stated in an interview that he regretted the failure of the operation. The man was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but the 39th US President Jimmy Carter commuted his sentence. Liddy spent 4.5 years behind bars. The court found him guilty of burglary, conspiracy, and illegal wiretapping.
