One EU country is preparing to mine its bridges connecting the country with Russia – NBC News

Europeans are concerned about the possibility of an attack by the Kremlin after what is happening in Ukraine.

Lithuania plans to install mines on its bridges leading to Russia, which could explode if the Kremlin's tanks try to cross them.

NBC writes about this News.

NATO ships in the Baltic Sea are searching for Russia's so-called “Shadow Fleet,” which is accused of cutting undersea communications cables. And plans are underway to build a large missile defense system in the skies over Europe, similar to Israel's “Iron Dome,” but designed to intercept missiles launched by Moscow.

European governments and citizens are worried that a measured Kremlin could turn its armies back on them after Ukraine. There is also widespread nervousness that the new isolationist U.S. president has suggested that he might not defend America's historic NATO allies if Russia attacks them.

European officials have repeatedly said that Putin is preparing for war with the West. For many, it's already happening: Analysts, governments, and NATO have accused Moscow of “hybrid war” attacks, ranging from meddling in elections to attempting to shoot down airliners with firebombs.

European Union Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius has said Lithuania intends to spend 5 to 6 percent of its GDP on defense in the coming years.

“Europe must be prepared for the most extreme military situations,” a bloc spokesman told NBC News in an email when asked if the continent was preparing for a worst-case scenario of war with Russia. “In simple terms: to prevent war, we need to spend more. If we wait longer, it will cost us more,” he said.

Recall that Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys reported a new case of damage to an underwater cable in the Baltic Sea, between Latvia and Sweden.
