Great spectacle in the stadium of the first games in 1896.
The Olympic flame for the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing was handed over to the Chinese Organizing Committee in Athens on Tuesday. The ceremony was held in the Panathinaikon Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896. Because of the corona pandemic, only a few invited guests were allowed.
The flame had been kindled the day before with the help of a concave mirror and the rays of the sun in the ancient site of Olympia on the Greek peninsula of Peloponnese. Some protesters tried to disrupt the ceremony. They protested loudly and with banners against human rights violations in China, Tibet and Hong Kong. The police took her into custody.
Because of the corona pandemic, there was no long torch relay in Greece. The Beijing Winter Olympics will take place from February 4th to 20th, 2022.
