Tokyo
The Summer Olympics start in three months. There is still great skepticism in Japan.
One year late, the Summer Olympics will open in Tokyo on July 23rd – at least that's the plan. Because it is still not certain whether the coronavirus pandemic will even allow the gigantic sports festival to be held.
The Japanese population has little desire for the spectacle, around 72 percent of the residents are in favor of a cancellation or renewed postponement.
And the government does not seem to be absolutely convinced of the mega event either. Toshihiro Nikai, the general secretary of the Liberal Democratic Party, said in a TV interview: “We have to cancel the games without hesitation if they are no longer possible. If the corona infections increase because of the Olympics, I don't know what the games are good for should be.”
In Japan, the vaccination program is progressing very slowly. Less than one percent of the approximately 126 million inhabitants have so far had an initial stitch.
