Apple continues its practice of slowing down older iPhones after iOS updates, Chinese portal MyDrivers found out. Research has shown that devices start to work faster and smoother if you change the region to France in the settings. In February 2020, this country fined the corporation € 25 million for deliberately reducing the performance of processors on older devices.
Portal MyDrivers tested the performance of outdated iPhones using special programs (benchmarks) GeekBench and AnTuTu. The latter compares the power of the processors in points. iPhone 7, if China is specified as the region in the settings, scores 78,719 points. However, after the change of location to France, the figure rises by 9% – up to 85,477.
According to MyDrivers, changing the region similarly affects the performance of some iPad models. At the same time, the devices of the current iPhone 12 line function the same, regardless of the specified location.
According to the researchers, the differences in the performance of older devices are associated with a more rigid approach of French regulators to Apple's policies. In 2018, 15,000 iPhone users in France said that after installing an iOS update, their iPhone 6, SE and 7 started to run slower, especially in cold weather. At the same time, the gadget manufacturer itself did not inform the owners about the slowdown of the gadgets. Unable to go back to the old version of the system, users had to buy new batteries or new phones.
As a result, Apple agreed to an amicable agreement with the prosecutor's office. The IT giant had to pay a € 25 million fine, and the corporation also added a function to iOS to track the status of the battery. The cost of replacing batteries in older iPhone models in France has dropped 2.5 times. In March 2021, Apple was also fined in Brazil. For the sale of the iPhone 12 without chargers, the corporation had to pay 10.5 million reais (almost $ 2 million).
