Older Android smartphones will no longer receive Google services updates

by alex

Google will soon stop updating its services on smartphones running Android Jelly Bean. The operating system was introduced in 2012.

The decision applies to all three versions of Jelly Bean – 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3. The last update will be August 21.30.99.

All three versions of Jelly Bean now account for less than 1% of active Android devices. Google isn't even sure if these smartphones are actually being used by anyone. The company will stop supporting these Android versions, which will ease the burden on the development team.

Application developers are also encouraged to opt out of Jelly Bean support. However, if the app has a significant user base, developers can upload multiple APKs to the Play Store.
