Obsessive Android: Google in South Korea fined almost $ 177 million
Google has received a multimillion-dollar fine for alleged abuse of dominance in South Korea, local agency Yonhap reported, citing the regulator.
Reporters note that the American IT giant has hindered competition in the market for mobile operating systems and applications. Google demanded that mobile device manufacturers enter into an agreement under which they will not be able to install modified versions of the Android operating system on smartphones and tablets. In addition, the company did not allow local manufacturers such as Samsung to use OS from other developers.
According to the antitrust regulator of the Republic of Korea, these actions impede innovation in the creation of new “operating systems” for phones. As a result, Google was fined 207.4 billion won ($ 176.8 million).
We will remind, in the spring, the Federal Court of Australia accused Google that the corporation misled users regarding the use of location data that was collected using mobile devices. And before that, Roskomnadzor reported that the company paid a fine of three million rubles for not deleting prohibited information from a search engine.
