Nur-Sultan drowned in a cloud of smog: there are too many harmful substances in the air

Nur-Sultan has broken the record for air pollution in Kazakhstan. The city was enveloped in a dense veil of smog. The maximum permissible concentration of harmful substances in the air is exceeded several times. What is the reason and why the capital of the republic entered the top 10 environmentally dirty cities in the world, the correspondent of “MIR 24” Gulmira Zhanzakova learned.

The main attractions of Nur-Sultan were enveloped in thick smog. Smoke blanket as a backdrop for a thriller. The buildings are only visible from a bird's eye view. Cars travel at low speed, visibility is practically zero. It is better to look at the city through a closed window. Many residents of the capital felt an unpleasant smell.

Thick smoke comes from the private sector. With the arrival of cold weather, people often heat stoves. At night, temperatures drop to minus 28. Some people use more than coal to burn their homes. They burn everything that comes to hand – even household waste. It goes into the atmosphere.

“Under the influence of the anticyclone, the weather is calm, slightly cloudy, without precipitation. Also, there is no mixing of air masses in the upper layers, ”noted engineer-forecaster Saida Berdibekova.

Ecological posts record that the maximum permissible concentration of harmful substances in the air in some cities of Kazakhstan has been exceeded five times. According to meteorologists, Nur-Sultan, Almaty, Atyrau and Aktobe became the dirtiest this year.

“But, if, for example, with the cities of Temirtau, Balkhash, Ust-Kamenogorsk, everything is clear – the fact is that there are large metallurgical enterprises, for example, a large oil refinery in Atyrau, then how did Nur-Sultan and Almaty is a very interesting question, because we do not have large enterprises in these cities, ”said Tolebay Adilov, environmental manager of the Association of Environmental Organizations of Kazakhstan.

Another problem is the exhaust fumes from cars. According to ecologists, they account for about 70% of the total emission of harmful substances into the air. In Nur-Sultan, there are approximately 23 cars for every 100 inhabitants. But the level of concentration of nitrogen dioxide in Almaty is higher. It is exceeded by the WHO limit by two times.

Smog envelops cities all the time. Haze dissipates only if the wind changes direction. In a blizzard, oddly enough, it is easier to breathe than in good weather.
