Among the homeless in Germany, the largest group are Ukrainians who fled the war.
More than 470,000 people without their own homes have been registered in Germany, almost a third of whom are refugees from Ukraine. The largest number of homeless people are located in the western federal states, while the smallest number is in the eastern ones.
The publication STERN.de writes about this.
Of all officially registered homeless people, 29% are refugees from Ukraine, making them the largest national group among the homeless in Germany. Over the year, the number of Ukrainians without housing has grown from 136,900 to 137,800 people. Only 409 thousand people from among those registered are foreigners (this is 86% of all those recorded).
These statistics include people living in shelters, temporary dormitories or social housing. At the same time, people living in the open air are not included in these figures.
41% of homeless people are under 25 years old, and another 5% are over 65 years old. More than half of all registered homeless people are men. The average age of people without housing is 31 years.
The largest number of homeless people in Germany live in the most densely populated regions:
Destatis notes that the increase in the number of officially registered homeless people may be due not only to an actual increase, but also to improved data collection, since statistics have only been kept since 2022.
Let us recall that we previously wrote that Germany is predicting an increase in the number of Ukrainian refugees due to the decision of US President Donald Trump to suspend military aid to Ukraine.
It was also reported that Germany had temporarily stopped accepting refugees under the resettlement program coordinated by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
In addition, as of May, the number of refugees in Germany reached 3.45 million, a third of them from Ukraine. Over the year, 108 thousand Ukrainians arrived, making a total of about 1.2 million.
