Number of applications for US unemployment benefits increases again

by alex

Last week, 742,000 Americans filed for unemployment benefits

The number of initial jobless claims in the USA is surprisingly rising again. A total of 742,000 Americans submitted such a request for state support last week, 31,000 more than a week earlier, according to the Department of Labor in Washington. Economists, however, had expected a decrease to 707,000.

The ailing job market is one of the greatest challenges for future US President Joe Biden. More than 22 million jobs have been lost because of the corona pandemic, of which only 12.1 million have been regained so far. Since the number of new positive corona tests recently reached record levels, new restrictions have been imposed on companies in a number of regions. This could lead to them breaking up with employees or not hiring new ones.
