Shilo, one of the largest in Russia, will be the first in the country to create 15 viewing dens, which will enable visitors to watch sleeping bears through glass in winter. The objects will appear in the fall during the construction of pavilions for Malay bears and the reconstruction of enclosures for brown and Himalayan bears, Zoo director Andrei Shilo told reporters on Wednesday.
“They will open at certain times to minimize disturbing the animals. It will be possible to observe [through the glass]. This will be used for the first time in Russia, so we will evaluate the mentality of people. If people do not wake up a bear in winter, it will work. go wrong, it will be used for scientific purposes for the zoo staff, “he said.
As Shilo said, work on the construction of new and reconstruction of old enclosures will be completed in October-November, earlier it was reported about plans to commission the facilities by August. At the same time, the Malay bears, which were expected in Novosibirsk in 2021, will settle in the zoo no earlier than 2022. According to the director, each bear species will have its own zone and habitat. For example, a section of water will be created for brown bears, where fish will be released in doses. This will give the animals an opportunity to get food on their own, close to their natural habitat.
As the deputy governor of the region Irina Manuylova said, in the near future the authorities will allocate 40 million rubles from the regional budget to maintain the species diversity of the zoo and complete the construction of enclosures. Another 20 million rubles for these purposes will be allocated by the zoo. According to her, four buildings have already been erected on the territory, where finishing work will begin in the near future with a disguise for the natural natural zones of the enclosures of the enclosures – the Far East, Siberia, Asia.
Earlier this year, Shiloh reported that zoo staff had begun building warm pavilions for Malay bears and renovating enclosures for brown and Himalayan bears. The work was planned to be completed by the end of August 2021, the cost of the enclosure complex was estimated at 120 million rubles. Also this year, it was planned to replenish the number of pets with the first Malay bears in the country listed in the International Red Book.
The Novosibirsk Zoo, one of the largest in Russia, contains more than 780 animal species in natural conditions on an area of 65 hectares. More than 120 of them were included in the International Red Book. The staff of the zoo participates in 45 international programs for the conservation of rare and endangered animal species. The zoo has one of the world's best collections of the feline family, including Amur tigers, Far Eastern and clouded leopards.
