The Norwegian Prime Minister said the country is monitoring the situation.
The Norwegian authorities are ready to close checkpoints on the border with Russia, said Prime Minister of the Kingdom Jonas Gahr Støre.
This was reported by TV2.
Jonas Gahr Stere commented on the possibility of imitating the actions of Finland, which on November 24 closed all checkpoints on the border with Russia, except one.
As the head of the Norwegian government noted, closing the border with the aggressor state can happen “if necessary.” This is how he answered questions from journalists regarding whether the corresponding step would be appropriate.
Let us note that Norway’s neighboring states – Finland and Estonia – have already decided to close checkpoints on the border with Russia. As international media write, the decision of the authorities of these countries can serve as an example for Oslo to follow.
According to Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo, the corresponding decision will come into force on the night of November 23-24. However, one border crossing point between Raya and Joseppi will still be open.
The situation on the border between Finland and Russia
Finland plans to close all checkpoints on its eastern border with Russia. The reason is the assistance of Russian border guards in crossing illegal immigrants from third countries.
On the night of November 18, Finland closed checkpoints on the border with the Russian Federation. The reason was massive cases when citizens of third countries arrived at the border without documents requiring asylum. This happened with the assistance of Russia.
Even earlier, the Finnish authorities introduced an additional restrictive measure – they banned crossing the border with Russia by bicycle. The reason was that in recent months a record number of Russians and third-country citizens without entry documents have tried to enter Finland.
In addition, Finland has almost stopped allowing Russians with Schengen visas into its territory and has introduced a ban on the entry of cars registered in the Republic of Armenia.
According to available intelligence, Russian authorities are involved in transporting illegal migrants to the Finnish border.
