Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded for the discovery of new methods for the synthesis of molecules
German chemist, director of the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research Benjamin List and Princeton University professor David Macmillan were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2021. Scientists will receive an award for research in the field of asymmetric organocatalysis, the Nobel Committee said. The names of the winners were announced at a committee ceremony on Wednesday in Stockholm.
Asymmetric organocatalysis studies the possibility of complex asymmetric reactions. Small organic molecules are used as catalysts, usually amino acids, some amines and their derivatives.
The day before, the Nobel Prize winners in physics became known. Shukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselman will receive the award for physical modeling of the Earth's climate, assessment of variability and reliable prediction of global warming, as well as the Italian Giorgio Parisi, professor emeritus of theoretical physics at the University of Rome, La Sapienza. He discovered the interaction of irregularities and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.
On Thursday, the Nobel Committee will name the laureate of the Literature Prize.
Let us remind you that this year the amount of the monetary component of the prize is 10 million Swedish kronor (approximately one million dollars). The awards ceremony will take place on December 10, the birthday of Alfred Nobel. It will be held online due to the covid pandemic.
