The award was received by the Japanese movement against nuclear weapons.
The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo. The movement arose in response to the nuclear attacks of August 1945.
The Nobel Committee announced this on October 11.
“This mass movement of survivors of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, receives the Peace Prize for its efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through eyewitness testimony that nuclear weapons should never be used again. Its members have spread awareness of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons,” the committee said.
“The testimony of the Hibakusha – the survivors of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki – is unique in this larger context. These historical witnesses helped to create and consolidate widespread opposition to nuclear weapons around the world by drawing on personal stories, creating educational campaigns upon educational campaigns, and issuing urgent statements against the proliferation and use of nuclear weapons,” the committee explained.
The Nobel Committee also noted that no nuclear weapons had been used in war for nearly 80 years, and the efforts of Nihon Hidankyo and other Hibakusha representatives had greatly contributed to establishing the nuclear taboo.
The Nobel Committee reportedly registered 286 candidates for the prize this year, including 197 individuals and 89 organizations. Among the favorites, experts named the United Nations Office for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the International Court of Justice, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Recall that in 2023, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Iranian human rights activist Nargiz Mohammadi for her fight against the suppression of women in Iran and the promotion of human rights and freedom for all.
